Biography

My main research interest is the effect of host responses on bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics. It has become clear that host cells may cause limited oxygen availability in bacterial infections, whereby a stratified physiology occurs, that is associated with increased tolerance of antibiotics.

I am currently investigating the effect of supplementation of O2 under hyperbaric pressure in combination with antibiotics on bacterial biofilm in order to increase the bactericidal activity of antibiotics. I conduct research studies with a primary focus on the interaction between infection and inflammation in patients with acute and chronic lung infection. I use my knowledge and establish methods in different patient groups to explore differences and similarities in bacterial physiology and treatment outcomes. The special area of interest is pneumonia.
