Biography
Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist whose research has reshaped our understanding of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and metabolic health. As the George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and of Cellular & Molecular Physiology at Yale, and Co-Director of Yale’s Diabetes Research Center, he has led pioneering work using non-invasive tools—like magnetic resonance spectroscopy with mass spectrometry—to observe how glucose and fats are processed inside liver and muscle cells.
His lab investigates how ectopic fat (fat stored where it shouldn’t be), disrupted mitochondrial activity, and abnormal lipid accumulation lead to insulin resistance and metabolic disease. Dr. Shulman’s team also explores new therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial metabolism, intracellular coenzyme systems, and regulatory pathways in hopes of treating not just diabetes but also obesity, fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), and related disorders.
