Biography
Anna Krook is Professor of Integrative Physiology at Karolinska Institutet and a leading expert in metabolism and type 2 diabetes. Her research explores how physical activity, nutrition, and molecular signals influence insulin sensitivity and energy regulation, particularly in skeletal muscle. Her group was among the first to use ex vivo human muscle biopsies to identify defects in insulin signalling. She also investigates the roles of non-coding RNAs, mitochondrial function, and circadian rhythms in glucose uptake and metabolic health. Krook combines molecular biology, cell and animal models, and clinical studies to uncover mechanisms behind metabolic diseases. Her goal is to identify new targets for treatment and develop personalized interventions, whether lifestyle-based or pharmacological. She serves as editor for journals including Diabetologia and the American Journal of Physiology and is known for translating basic research into clinical relevance.
