Biography
Andrea Heinz is Associate Professor at the LEO Foundation Center for Cutaneous Drug Delivery at the University of Copenhagen. Her research explores how to deliver medicines more effectively through the skin and how the skin’s structure changes with age and disease. Combining pharmaceutical science, materials engineering and biology, her group studies key proteins such as elastin and collagen to understand how their breakdown affects drug absorption and inflammation. She develops smart biomaterials and polymer-based systems that release drugs in a controlled way, improving treatment for conditions like psoriasis and eczema. One of her major innovations is a nanofiber patch that delivers several active substances at once, offering a cleaner and more precise alternative to creams. Through her interdisciplinary approach, she aims to bridge basic skin biology with advanced drug delivery to create more effective, patient-friendly therapies.
