Sean K. Bay is a researcher in microbial ecology at La Trobe University, where he studies the diversity, function and evolution of microorganisms in environmental systems. His research focuses on how microbial communities contribute to global biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes.

Bay’s work combines genomics, metagenomics and computational approaches to investigate microorganisms that are difficult to culture in the laboratory. He is particularly interested in how microbes adapt to extreme or nutrient-limited environments and how these adaptations influence ecosystem function. By reconstructing genomes from environmental samples, his research provides insight into microbial metabolism, interactions and ecological roles. His work contributes to a growing understanding of how microbial life shapes Earth’s systems and responds to environmental change.
