Biografi

Olav B. Smeland is a consultant psychiatrist and translational psychiatry researcher with a PhD in neuroscience. He works at the Centre for Precision Psychiatry at the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital, led by Professor Ole A. Andreassen.

Smeland’s research applies advanced statistical methods to large-scale genetic and multi-omics datasets to better understand the biological foundations of psychiatric disorders. His work explores how genetic risk for mental illness overlaps with neurological and other clinically related conditions, revealing shared molecular mechanisms across diseases. By integrating genetics, epidemiology and clinical data, he aims to develop improved prediction tools and support precision medicine approaches in psychiatry.

He has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications and contributes to international collaborations within the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.
