Biografi

Cecilia Lindgren is a geneticist whose research has transformed our understanding of obesity and metabolic disease. She studies how genetic variation influences fat distribution and why some people are more prone to conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Originally from Sweden, she earned her PhD at Lund University and trained at the Whitehead Institute before moving to Oxford, where she is now Director of the Big Data Institute and Professor of Genomic Endocrinology and Metabolism. Her work uses large-scale genomic and health data to identify thousands of genetic variants linked to obesity—revealing how fat stored around the organs poses particular health risks. Lindgren has authored more than 600 papers and is among the world’s most cited researchers. She is also a strong advocate for open science, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the use of data to drive innovation in healthcare.
