Biografi

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles in most eukaryotic cells, adapting their shape, motility, and metabolism to environmental and energy demands. Understanding these processes is key to recognizing defects in inborn metabolic disorders and their role in diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, neurodegeneration, and autoimmunity.

Mitochondria have their own circular DNA (mtDNA), present in multiple copies. Our research explores mitochondrial DNA and RNA regulation, gene expression, and RNA turnover, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model. We analyze RNAi knockdowns and gene-modified flies via molecular and biochemical techniques.

Anna Wredenberg, a clinical genetics specialist at Karolinska University Hospital, focuses on rare mitochondrial diseases. Advances in sequencing help diagnose known disorders and identify new disease candidates, requiring pathogenicity validation.
